Several user complaints have lately surfaced indicating that only Mozilla’s Firefox was unable to access or display several official Microsoft websites.
And, contrary to popular belief, this was not the outcome of the ongoing browser wars. With fact, numerous Microsoft sub-domains failed to load in the most recent and stable version of Firefox.
Yes, the above-mentioned websites functioned well in Edge, Safari, Chrome, and other major web browsers, as well as on PCs and mobile versions of the applications.
What prompted this vexing problem?
Secure Connection Failed error messages were shown to Firefox users who attempted to visit the websites we discussed.
A connection to docs.microsoft.com failed due to an issue. The status of the certificate being validated is not included in the OCSP response.
MOZILLA PKIX ERROR OCSP RESPONSE FOR CERT MISSING is the error code. • The legitimacy of the received data could not be validated, hence the page you were attempting to access could not be shown. • Please contact the website’s proprietors to let them know about the issue.
The issue seemed to be related to OCSP and its failure to respond to the Cert request. The problem was quickly rectified by removing OCSP stapling feature in Firefox.
It’s also worth noting that deactivating OCSP isn’t a recommended approach, even if it is a workaround.
The Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) is a technique for collecting information on certificate revocation.
To summarize, Firefox refused to show Microsoft’s sub-domains because they failed to comply with their OCSP obligations.
In the absence of such information, Firefox just chooses not to show the sub-domains. The security protocol checks for particular certificates and whether they were recently revoked, and in the absence of such information, Firefox simply chooses not to display the sub-domains.
Microsoft recently neglected to renew a security certificate, and Mozilla Firefox happens to be the only online browser that checks for such information.
However, you shouldn’t be concerned since the most recent update for Mozilla Firefox, version 95.0.1, resolves the difficulties with Microsoft websites.
There’s a lot of gray in this situation since it’s unclear why Mozilla made any modifications, and it’s Microsoft’s job to undertake due diligence for their OCSP.
